Sweet wines are those that have more than 121 grammes of residual sugar per litre, according to the rules. To put it another way, there are different levels of sweetness inside one umbrella term. The quantity of fruit that comes through in wines like gamay or merlot might make them appear sugary to some. Other red wines contain sugar in them, making them a sweet red wine in every sense of the word. Sweet red wines include fortified wines, which are fermented with the addition of a spirit like brandy. Only because a wine features a dry character doesn't necessarily imply one can't spot some that offer the sweet attributes your mouth desires.
